BUSINESS ETHICS
Business ethics refers to the standards for morally right and wrong conduct inbusiness.Law partially defines the conduct,but "legal" and ethical are'nt necessarily the same. Business ethics enhances the law by outlining acceptable behavious beyond governmen control.Corporations establish business ethics to promote integrity among their employees and gain trust from key stakeholders,such as investors and consumers.While corporate ethics programs have become common,the quality varies.
Interest in business ethics accelerated dramatically during the 1980's and 1990's,both within major corporations and within academia.For example ,most major corporations today promote their commitment to non-economic values under headings such as ethics codes and social responsibility charters.History
Adam smith said in 1776,"people of the same trade seldom meet together,even for merriment and diversion,but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public,or in some contrivance to raise prices.Government use laws and regulations to point business behaviour in what they perceive to be beneficial directions.Ethics implicitly regulates areas and details of behaviour that lie beyond governmental control.The emergence of large corporations with limited relationships and sensitivity to the communities in which they operate accelerated the development of formal ethics regimes.
Maintaining an ethical status is the responsibility of the manager of the business.According to a 1990 article in the journal of Business Ethics,"Managing ethical behaviour is one of the most pervasive and complex problems facing business organizations today.Business ethics reflect the norms of each historical period.As time passes,norms evolve,causing accepted behaviours to become objectionable.Business Ethics and the resulting behaviour evolved aswell.Business was involved in slavery,colonialism,and the cold war.
Role Of Business Ethics in Management
Top Management of any Business makes various decisions daily.These decisions influence the company's success and the employees lives.They also impact customers satisfaction.Any choices leads to positive or negetive consequences.It influences finances,reputation,working atmosphere etc.Good business ethics is relevent to management today.The ethical decisions gives an example to other employees.It endorses healthy working relations.And it increases a companys financial success as a result.
There are more top managers fired for unethical behaviour now than before.The rising awareness of this issue makes it essential in management.The number of such misdeeds has nor grown;it attracts more attention now.People expect leaders to follow business ethics and set the tone.One of the reason is technology made it all easier to track.People use digital means of communication,which are easy to trace.It works both for messages and browser history.
Branches of Business Ethics
Meta-ethics : Meta means about the things itself.So meta ethics is ethics of ethics.It seeks to understand the nature of ethical properties and judgements.Meta-ethics looks into the characteristics and nature of ethics
Normative ethics : The elaboration of norms prescribing what is right or wrong,what must be done or what must not
Applied ethics :The ethics branch which examines how ethics theories can be applied to specific problems of actual life.
Moral ethics: A descriptive ethics or morals is a study of human behaviour as a consequence of beliefs about what is right or wrong,or good or bad.In a sinse,morals are the study of what is thought to be right and what is generally done by a group,society,or a culture.
Personal and Professional ethics:Personal ethics refers to the application of personal values in everything one does.Personal ethics might also be called morality,since they reflect general expectation of any person must adhere to in respect of their interactions and business dealings in their professional life.Professional ethiccs means adherence to professional code of ethics.
Objectives of business ethics evaluate human behaviour based on moral standards which instruct people or organisations how to act morally at four levels-personal,internal,stakeholder and societal.
At personal level:At personal level,the objective should specify how people should treat one another in the organisation,their obligations to the organisation and how they should follow the rules and regulations of organisation.their obligations to the organisation and how they should follow the rules and regulations of organisation.
An internal level:Ethical problems arise in the relations of the employees with the organisation.Fair employment contract,their rights and obligations etc.Only fair practices should be encouraged among the employees and the management.Free and frank communication among the stakeholders should be insisted.This will yield better productivity.
Employees make better decisions in less time with business ethics as a guiding principle,this increases productivity and overall employees morale.When employees complete work in a way that is based on honesty and integrity,the whole organization benefits.Good business ethics is crucial for creating a healthy workplace.It influences the productivity and profitability of a company.It ensures security among emplyees,increases their loyalty and efficiency.Transparent values make a business more exciting to investors.Almost every company now has a business ethics program.In part,that's because technology and digital communication have made it easier to identify and publicize ethical missteps.To avoid the negative implications,companies are devoting more resources to business ethics.In one survey of accountants,for example,55 percent said they believe the importance of business ethics will continue to grow in the next three years.In addition to establishing formal programs,companies are creating ethical workplaces by hiring the right talent."high integrity and honesty" is the second most important skill for business leaders,according to a recent survey.Todays business professionals must understand the link between business ethics and business success.The global reserch company Gartner advises company to integrate their ethics program with business operations.Doing so can maximize the program's impact by making ethical process part of employees workflow.According to Gartner,an ethics program should:
