AI CAMERA
The state motor vehicle department made the AI camera system operational last week as part of the Safe Kerala drive aimed at preventing road accidents and detecting traffic crimes using modern technology. Under the project, the department deployed 726 AI-enabled cameras across various highways in the state.The installations include 675 cameras which will detect offences such as failure to wear helmets and seat belts and instances of hit-and-run, 25 to spot unauthorised parking, 18 to capture visuals of vehicles jumping traffic signals, and eight to monitor speeding.
           These cameras are capable of High End Image Processing in real time wherein they detect speed using a simple principle. The steps seem to be comprehensive but take place in the backend with the blink of an eye.For a 3-megapixel artificial intelligence (AI) camera unit Keltron quoted Rs 9.96 lakh but the market rate is Rs 1.60 lakh. Similarly for a 5-megapixel AI camera unit Keltron's price was Rs 10.32 lakh when the market rate is a lowly Rs 2 lakh.
Initially, the cameras will detect violations such as driving/riding without fastening seat belts/wearing helmets, use of mobile phones while driving/riding, over-speeding, unauthorised parking, and two-wheelers exceeding the permissible seating capacity of two passengers. The fines range from ₹500 to ₹2,000.

nitially, the AI cameras will focus on detecting violations such as riding a two-wheeler without a helmet, carrying more than two passengers on a two-wheeler, using a mobile phone while driving, and running red lights. The "Safe Kerala" project has adopted the "Fully Automated Traffic Enforcement System" to detect offenses using cameras, as the Motor Vehicle Department believes that roadside policing is inconvenient for the general public.

 
The AI cameras are powered by solar energy and use 4G LTE SIM cards to transmit data. The camera box's visual processing unit will analyse each vehicle. Images of vehicles and drivers that violate traffic laws will be sent to the Motor Vehicles Department's control room.
The earliest successful AI program was written in 1951 by Christopher Strachey, later director of the Programming Research Group at the University of Oxford. Strachey's checkers (draughts) program ran on the Ferranti Mark I computer at the University of Manchester, England.

There is still no common understanding and attitude toward artificial intelligence. Some see it simply as a technical tool for work, others as an object for entertainment, and still others as a danger to human existence. One can only say with certainty that AI is playing an ever-increasing role in our daily lives, whether we like it or not. And this is not happening somewhere in the distant future, but here and now

 

AI cameras use object detection algorithms to detect dangerous situations in real-time. This allows them to alert people immediately when something out of the ordinary is happening. With AI cameras, dangerous objects can be detected before an accident occurs, thus saving lives and preventing costly mistakes.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, there were over 4.5 lakh road accidents in India in 2019, which resulted in over 1.5 deaths. Kerala was ranked fifth in terms of the total number of road accidents.

It is part of the government’s efforts to reduce the number of road accidents in the state.

The project is being implemented with the help of various technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI), to curb traffic rule violations and reduce road accidents.AI can improve the quality of crash data collection and analysis, provide insights on how to avert collisions, and improve the response after crashes. The resulting insights can, in turn, help shape more effective regulatory frameworks for road safety.With the use of AI, road accidents can be curbed, particularly in the metaverse, which brings together technology and science to reduce human error. This can help with accurate driver assessment, driver profile based on driving skills, better collection and analysis of crash data and more
